Paul Rothwell Smith

I love coming up with strange and new ideas. The series of paintings in the exhibition this year have been created over the last two years. I paint what pops into my head and like to exaggerate things to make my paintings more interesting. Often a story emerges as I’m painting.
I mix modern references with Victorian styles and like to add surprises, being as original as possible. I’m inspired by old films, old photographs and often incorporate local landmarks.
I studied Art & Design at College in Nottingham in the early 1990s and have had exhibitions in Wales and England; painting and selling portraits for over 25 years.
I am a film historian and have had 3 books published on silent film performers.
I’ve worked as an Occupational Therapy assistant in the NHS, as an Activities Coordinator with My Sight and currently work for Oxfam.
